Yamaha | MODX M | Sound Demo - Hear the Future of Expression
The Yamaha MODX M6 at a glance:
With the MODX M6, Yamaha presents the latest generation of the popular performance synthesizer. At the same time, the M generation makes itself interesting for keyboardists, pianists and synth enthusiasts, as it shines with a selection of over 3000 high-quality sounds, has an excellent keyboard and allows detailed interventions in the sound. The 61-key FSB keyboard is naturally velocity-sensitive and provides a very good playing feel. The redesigned control panel features a number of innovations that offer a significantly improved and more effective workflow and have a lot to offer in terms of performance. The M generation has significantly more controls than its predecessors. At first glance, the six encoders below the display and the 8 faders (previously 4 faders) catch the eye. The Super Knob is now equipped with an LED ring that can also display smaller value changes. In addition, the registers for the four knobs have been expanded to 2x4 fixed entries and 2x4 freely assignable entries. The Scene buttons can be used to save and call up eight different settings for each part. The already rich sound generation of the predecessors now also offers the AN-X Engine, a reminiscence of the analog cult sounds of the 70s and 80s. Yamaha has given the FM-X Engine an Easy Mode to make it easier to elicit good sounds from the complex FM-Synthese. The arpeggiator is available for eight parts simultaneously and is more than generously equipped with almost 11,000 presets. The MODX M is backwards compatible with MODX, MODX+, Montage, Montage M, Motif XF, Motif XS and MOXF in terms of User Voices and Performances. You can therefore continue to use the older sounds of these synthesizers with the latest model!
The heart of the MODX M is of course the digital sound generation, which now includes AN-X synthesis in addition to AWM2 and FM-X:
The AWM2 engine offers an extremely successful all-round sound from music history with pretty much everything you would expect from a fully-fledged workstation. The richness of sound detail is realized with up to 128 elements per part, resulting in super smooth transitions and sound progressions. This naturally also benefits the included piano sounds.
With the FM-X engine, Yamaha's heritage of the cult synthesis of the DX-7 lives on. Once again, you have access to up to eight operators and 88 FM algorithms. Yamaha has developed the EASY MODE especially for the FM-X Engine, which makes it easy for beginners in particular to elicit usable sounds from the complex FM synthesis.
The AN-X Engine is fully dedicated to analog sounds, without wanting to be a copy of Yamaha's own classic AN1x. The engine offers three oscillators, each with five waveforms plus PWM, Hardsync and a noise generator. Two filters with ten filter types form the rich basic sound of the tone generators. This sound generation is rounded off with a ring modulator, FM and waveshaper. Two ADSR envelopes and two LFOs are used for modulation.
Yamaha has equipped the MODX M with plenty of voices. These are divided into 128 voices for AWM2, 128 voices for FM-X and 12 voices for the AN-X engine. The sound memory should be sufficient for the time being with 10.7 GB Preset waveforms and 2.1 GB flash memory for user waveforms. The MODX M comes with 3427 sounds ex works, so there's something for everyone. There are 640 memory locations for User presets. Effects are known to be the salt in the soup, but in this case it can be a little more. Reverb (12 types), Variation (88 types), Insertion A (88 types), Insertion B (89 types) and Master (26 types) are available. These include various Delay algorithms, modulation effects such as chorus, Flanger and Chorus as well as distortion effects. There is an EQ with 2 or 3 bands for each of the 8 parts and a 5-band EQ for the master.
Super Knob
Motion Control Synthesis Engine
This groundbreaking engine makes it possible to interact with sounds in a wide variety of ways. Among other things, this is implemented via motion sequences, with which dynamically automatable synth and effect parameters can even be realized tempo-synchronously. The Super Knob allows dozens of modulations to be controlled in parallel with just one turn of the knob, while the Envelope Follower generates modulations using an applied input signal (audio input) or another part. The MCS engine can do this and more, a real magic box for expressive sound changes and performances!
Realtime faders & controllers
The fixed parameter matrix respectively register with the four underlying encoders has been expanded to 2x4 fixed parameters and 2x4 freely assignable parameters. The same applies to the eight sliders, which have been doubled compared to their predecessor. Together with the function buttons, this gives you direct access to all the main functions and allows you to work with the synthesizer in a targeted manner without having to use the touchscreen for everything. This area also contains the mixer, which manages the 16 tracks (8 internal, 8 via MIDI/USB) and the effects.
7" touchscreen
Everything at a glance with the 7" touchscreen
The large 7" touchscreen is the central control element of the MODX M. The touchscreen provides access to all functions and features in razor-sharp image quality and displays all relevant information graphically. The technical leap compared to the previous model is particularly noticeable on the touchscreen and the six encoders below it.
Categories & Live Sets
Things are well organized here: the more than 3000 sounds are pre-sorted into categories, and you can of course also save your own sounds in these categories. This means you don't lose track and you can find the sounds you really need more quickly. The live sets are compilations of sounds and settings for several tracks at the same time. Over 8000 Live sets are available for this purpose. If you can't do without the DAW on stage, you have everything you need for the next song at your fingertips. The transport buttons can be used to conveniently control the DAW from the MODX M and operate the internal motion sequencer.
Professional connections
The rear of the MODX M is pleasingly versatile. In addition to the keyboard, there are foot pedal connections for expression, Sustain and two footswitches. This increases the expressive possibilities on the keyboard with the usual pedals. MIDI is communicated via the In/Out and USBconnection duo. This is perfect for anyone who wants to operate additional equipment such as a rack expander or a DAW with the MODX M. In its capacity as a performance synthesizer, audio inputs are of course a must! On the input side, the MODX M offers a pair of Stereo line inputs; for signal output, there is a stereo output with a large jack. Furthermore, audio can also be exchanged with the DAW via USB. A stereo input and five stereo outputs with 24 bit / 44.1 kHz are provided for this purpose. There is a USB device connection for expanding the memory and connecting additional keyboards and controllers.
