With the P-S500WH, Yamaha presents a digital piano of the upper class that focuses on innovation both functionally and sonically. The instrument is equipped with a very pleasant 88-key Graded Hammer Standard keyboard, which is fully weighted and velocity sensitive. Most of the controls are only visible when the instrument is switched on, as Yamaha has installed state-of-the-art touch sensor control panels. The P-S500 is equally aimed at beginners as it has implemented a clever learning methodology, the Stream Light function. Blue and red LEDs are located above each key, which, in combination with the over 400 pre-installed songs, signal which notes and, above all, when the notes are to be played.
Fantastic worlds of sound
The digital sound generation impresses with the meticulously created sounds of the two concert grand pianos Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial. Thanks to Virtual Resonance Modeling, these grand pianos sound amazingly authentic in the smallest nuances, which, together with the keyboard, makes playing a pleasure. In addition to the two concert grand pianos, the P-S500 WH provides access to 100 additional sounds, and if you include the Smart Pianist app, there are even 660 sounds! The high polyphony of 256 voices is more than sufficient, so that even with two people playing the instrument at high speed, no fading note is swallowed. To customize the sounds to your personal taste, there are five Reverb types, with the app there are even 58 types. A Master EQ, Intelligent Acoustic Control and the Stereophonic Optimizer, add that little bit more sound when needed. The polyphonic vocal harmonizer should be a welcome extra for singers and songwriters, especially since it can also follow played notes.
Playing aids and other special features
Of course, the P-S500 is equipped with Dual, Layer and Split modes for the keyboard. This makes it possible to distribute two different sounds over the entire keyboard, regardless of whether you want to combine an organ sound for the bass part or a piano sound with a string. With 100 Preset styles, the digital piano provides an extensive and, above all, versatile playing aid. When using the Smart Pianist app, the number of Preset styles increases to 370. A further 369 special featured styles can also be called up directly in the instrument without the app. The P-S500 is playback compatible under XG, GS, GM and GM2 on up to 16 tracks. The built-in recording function records audio and sheet music as desired, with the maximum length of audio files determined by the size of the USB flash drive (sold separately) used. The built-in stereo speakers have an above-average output of twice 20W + 6W and reproduce the sound events in detail. Two headphone outputs with good preamps do the rest so that you can enjoy the P-S500 undisturbed at any time of day.
The advantages of the Smart Pianist app
The handy Smart Pianist app opens up an even wider range of functions and, above all, even more ease of use to all smartphone and tablet owners with iOS or Android operating systems. The Audio to Score function automatically creates a piano accompaniment in sheet music form from the songs on your smart device, so you can play along with the pieces directly. With the Backing Band automatic accompaniment, a dynamic backing band is available to you at any time, which draws from a large pattern pool and has something suitable for various genres. Here you have the possibility to connect a microphone and to include the vocal harmonizer note-supported to your singing. Some of the piano sounds included in the P-S500 come from the world-class Yamaha CFX concert grand and the popular Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand. These have been recorded in great detail so that sound-influencing situations such as the location of the instrument (e.g. club, concert hall, cathedral) or even how wide the lid is open are editable at the touch of a finger. In combination with the excellent keyboard, this is amazingly close to a real, large concert grand piano. Last but not least, the app allows detailed setting options that only the instrument maker at the factory or a piano tuner can influence on a purely mechanical piano.
