Originally introduced nearly fifty years ago in 1974, this iconic series has been reimagined in collaboration with Yamaha teams in Tokyo, London, and Berlin, blending its beloved original design with modern refinements to meet the demands of today’s guitarists. The Japanese-made Yamaha SG now delivers a seamless fusion of vintage and contemporary features, including the classic mahogany/maple tonewood combination, premium Seymour Duncan USA humbuckers, and top-tier hardware from TonePros, Graph Tech, and Grover complete with a Hardshell Case!
The Yamaha SG1820’s body and neck construction adhere to the time-honored formula for solid tonal foundation, featuring a robust African mahogany body topped with a solid maple veneer. Its iconic dual cutaways provide effortless access to the upper frets, while the three-piece mahogany neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard offers a tactile platform for expressive playing. Thanks to a flat 13.75" radius and medium-jumbo frets, it accommodates agile lead lines, intricate layering, and expressive bends with ease.
For its sonic character, Yamaha Japan equips the SG1820 with a pair of Seymour Duncan SH-1 ’59 humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions. Modeled after the legendary PAF pickups, these humbuckers are a staple of the U.S. pickup manufacturer’s lineup and excel in harnessing the SG’s resonant body tone. Each pickup has dedicated Volume and Tone controls, with a classic three-way toggle switch enabling versatile selection, either individually or in combination.
The Yamaha SG1820 boasts a parts specification that reads like a “who’s who” of elite guitar hardware manufacturers. A TonePros AVR-II Tune-o-Matic bridge paired with a TonePros T1Z tailpiece with innovative locking functionality ensures maximum resonance transfer to the body. Up at the headstock, a Graph Tech TUSQ nut guarantees stable tuning and precise tonal response. Six top-quality Grover tuners with top-locking mechanisms enable fast, reliable string changes, rounding out a hardware package designed for professional performance.
