How a modern handpan works: build & sound principle

Handpans are melodic percussion instruments made from steel or stainless steel and played with the hands. The round body (approx. 50–65 cm diameter) is formed from two joined shells; the cavity acts as a resonator. On top sit precisely tuned tone fields that produce a clear note with long sustain when struck with control.

The concept is intuitive: strike briefly and cleanly, then lift your hand quickly – this keeps the tone focused and “singing”. For beginners, a harmonically tuned scale is a great choice, because most note combinations sound musical right away.

  • Ideal for: relaxation, yoga, sound journeys, ambient & songwriting
  • Great for: beginners, advanced players, lessons & home studios

Buying a handpan: scales & tuning frequencies explained

The scale defines your handpan’s tonal world: the centre note (Ding) anchors the instrument, while the outer notes (Chor) form the scale. Popular choices include D minor, D Kurd, C major and G major. Many handpans are set up so the notes fit together harmonically – making patterns and melodies feel natural from the start.

In addition to the scale, the tuning frequency matters: 440 Hz is the standard (great for playing with others), while 432 Hz is often chosen for relaxation settings. Also pay attention to number of tones and response so the instrument matches your playing style.

  • Ideal for: beginners, meditation/yoga sessions, sound design
  • Great for: solo playing, ensembles (440 Hz), recording & live

432 Hz vs 440 Hz – which frequency fits?

For band/studio work and playing with other instruments, 440 Hz is usually the most practical choice. 432 Hz is often used for relaxation and meditation and is sometimes perceived as softer. Beyond tuning, scale, material, technique and the room strongly shape what you hear.

FAQ – Handpans & steel tongue drums

The most common questions, answered clearly – ideal for beginners and anyone comparing options before buying.

What is a handpan?
A handpan is a melodic percussion instrument made from two steel shells with tuned tone fields on top and a resonance opening on the bottom. It’s played with the hands and produces soft, harmonically rich sounds.
What is a steel tongue drum (slit drum)?
A steel tongue drum is a tuned steel idiophone with cut tongues that vibrate when struck. It can be played with hands or soft mallets and produces clearly defined notes.
What’s the difference between a handpan and a steel tongue drum?
  • Handpan: shaped tone fields, mainly hand-played, highly nuanced dynamics.
  • Tongue drum: cut tongues, more direct/percussive, often more robust.
  • Handpans respond more dynamically; tongue drums are especially straightforward and forgiving.
Can beginners get started?
Yes. Tongue drums are very accessible thanks to consonant tunings; handpans need a bit more technique (strike/muting) but reward you with rich tone colour.
Hands or mallets – what should I use?
Handpans are typically played with hands/fingers; tongue drums can be played with hands or padded mallets (often included).
How many notes and which scale suits beginners?
Depending on the model: e.g. 8/9/10 tones (handpan) or 8/11/15 tongues (tongue drum). For beginners, harmonic scales are ideal because even simple patterns sound musical.
What buying criteria matter most?
Material/quality, build, number of tones/tongues, scale/tuning, accessories (bag/mallets), warranty and retuning options.
How do I care for and store the instrument?
Store dry, protect from moisture, keep hands clean; oil handpans as recommended by the maker; avoid extreme temperatures and direct sun.
Can a handpan be retuned or repaired?
Yes. Many makers and specialised workshops offer retuning and repairs – especially for handpans.
What are these instruments used for?
Meditation, yoga, sound journeys, studio work (ambient/new age), teaching, performance and relaxed playing at home.
Can I combine multiple instruments?
Yes: handpan + tongue drum, light percussion, loopers and effects (reverb/delay) for wide soundscapes.
