With Drumopolis SDX, Toontrack expands Superior Drummer 3 and an extraordinary drum library produced by legendary Grammy award-winning producer Tony Visconti. Recorded at the iconic Metropolis Studios in London, the expansion delivers an extensive collection of authentic rock drums with exceptional detail.

Over a career spanning almost six decades, Tony Visconti has made music history with artists such as David Bowie, T. Rex and Thin Lizzy. For this Library he applied his distinctive approach to modern drum production, creating a versatile collection that captures many facets of rock.

With eight fully sampled drum kits, a wide range of microphone positions and natural room ambience, Drumopolis SDX delivers everything from open, powerful rock sounds to dry and punchy vintage grooves.

Eight iconic drum kits from Metropolis Studios

The Library contains eight fully sampled drum kits that reflect different eras and sound aesthetics of rock. The recordings took place in two different rooms of Studio A at Metropolis Studios:

  • In the large main room, open, lively drum sounds with broad spatial imaging were created - inspired by Visconti's work with David Bowie.
  • Dry and powerful drum kits were recordedin the isolated recording room, which are more reminiscent of classic rock productions by Thin Lizzy or T. Rex.

In addition, the natural reverb of the adjacent Stone Room was captured with high-quality ribbon microphones and is available as a further room option at Mix.

Professional miking and studio recording

For maximum sound flexibility, each kit has been recorded with an extensive range of microphones. In addition to classic close mics, various room and ambience channels as well as surround microphones are available.

Among others, high-quality microphones were used such as:

  • Neumann U47 and M49
  • Coles 4038
  • AKG C414
  • Shure SM57
  • DPA 4007A
  • Royer R-121

This combination enables a realistic reproduction of space, depth and dynamics - ideal for professional mixes and productions.

Mix-ready presets by Tony Visconti

Drumopolis SDX contains an extensive collection of mix-ready presets. These were created by Tony Visconti, engineer Liam Nolan and the Toontrack team and cover a wide variety of rock sounds.

The presets can be used as ready-made drum mixes or as a starting point for your own sound design experiments.

MIDI grooves by Stephen Gilchrist

In addition, Library contains an extensive collection of MIDI grooves and fills recorded by Stephen Gilchrist (The Damned, Graham Coxon).

The MIDI patterns are stylistically based on classic rock productions and are particularly suitable for:

  • Classic Rock

  • glam rock

  • alternative rock

  • progressive rock

  • hard rock

Optimized for Superior Drummer 3

Drumopolis SDX was developed specifically for Superior Drummer 3 and takes full advantage of its powerful engine. The Library contains additional articulations for more realistic MIDI programming as well as special presets for electric drums.

A total of eight drum kits with 11 kicks, 13 snares, 34 toms, 22 cymbals and four Hi-Hat sets are available.
