In this edition of *The Harmony of Jazz*, Wolfgang Burbat – a jazz, chamber, studio and theatre musician, composer and co-founder of the ‘Jazz’ degree programme at the Berlin University of the Arts – introduces beginners to the world of jazz in an easy-to-understand way. To this end, he explains the chords and scales, as well as the functional theory of Hugo Riemann and Wilhelm Maler as it relates to jazz theory, thereby providing the tools for learning improvisation, arrangement and composition – everything that constitutes the creative work of a jazz musician.

He also provides an introduction to the history of jazz by sharing his extensive experience of the various styles with the reader.
