The Soul of the Drum Kit: A Journey to New Orleans

When it comes to the origins of groove, swing and funk, there’s no getting away from New Orleans. This is where the drum kit, as we know it today, was born. Here, African, Caribbean, French and Creole rhythms fused into a pulsating musical language that gave rise to jazz and funk. With the New Orleans EZX, Toontrack brings this unmistakable spirit straight into your studio – authentically captured under the guidance of Terence Higgins (Dr John, Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen Brass Band), one of the city’s most sought-after drummers.

Authentic sound from the capital of rhythm

No expense was spared for this EZX: the recordings were made at the legendary Esplanade Studios in the heart of the Tremé district. The studio is housed in a former church dating from the early 20th century and, with over 3,400 square feet and ceilings up to 8 metres high, offers impressive acoustics. To capture the characteristic sound of New Orleans, the drums were partially isolated using gobos – creating a lively yet intimate spatial sound that is instantly inspiring.

Two worlds: tradition meets modernity

The New Orleans EZX comprises two extensive drum libraries – Traditional and Artist – and brings together over a century of drumming history in five unique kits.

  • Traditional: Historical instruments, including an original set from the archives of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, rare ‘sock cymbals’ – an early precursor to the hi-hat –, antique parade snares and even a bass drum straight from the stage of the legendary Preservation Hall. The set is complemented by characteristic percussion such as a washboard, cowbells, a bottle, a pandeiro and a handcrafted ‘junk’ hi-hat for that typical swampy sound.
  • Artist: Modern kits inspired by the sounds from the 1950s onwards, ideal for soul, R&B and funk – perfectly suited to contemporary productions that nevertheless have their roots in the traditional groove.
