Analogue drum synthesiser

The analogue drum synthesiser DRM1 MkIV Trigger from Vermona is now available in its fourth generation and, with a market presence spanning over 20 years in total, can certainly be regarded as a timeless classic.

Features

The front panel, studded with 73 knobs, offers plenty of scope for tweaking on this desktop-compatible 19” / 5U rack-mount unit. Seven parameters, as well as level and pan, can be adjusted per channel. In total, the DRM1 features eight channels and eight voices, yet offers 10 instruments, a feature HiHat channels, which can alternatively be Cymbal.

Connections

The eight individual outputs can be used either as ‘ Insert; the processed signal is then output via the stereo output. All connections, including USB and the MIDI Trio, are staggered on the rear panel, so when installing the unit in a rack, you do not need to sacrifice any additional height units for the cables.

MkIV

The revised and optimised Vermona DRM1 MkIV Trigger now features a switching power supply (90–240 volts), USB MIDI, an additional MIDI output that converts the analogue drum triggers, even lower channel crosstalk, and can be played with great sensitivity via the trigger inputs using drum pads. The real highlight, however, is the revised analogue sound generation: the redesigned Kick channel now unmistakably captures the TR character and spans a very wide range, from very soft and restrained right through to massive and hard Industrial Techno-Kick. Overall, the MkIV sounds significantly fresher and airier than its predecessor. The two HiHatchannels can even produce reverse sounds depending on the settings, and both sound generators have been stabilised. Drum1 And Drum2 stand out thanks to differently tuned frequency ranges in the modulators and, furthermore, with Reset with every new Trigger. Likewise, the Clap channel has been revised; it now features additional control paths and harmonises “Reverb”.

Trigger option

The trigger option in the DRM1 MkIV allows the drum synthesiser to be played via drum pads from an electronic drum kit or a Eurorack sequencer. You can choose between Gate mode, two-stage Gate mode with velocity, or the full dynamic range across 128 levels. The note information obtained via the trigger option can be transmitted to other instruments or a DAW via MIDI Out or USB MIDI.
