Design and sound principle of a modern handpan

Handpans are melodic percussion instruments made from steel or stainless steel, played with the hands. The round body (approx. 50–65 cm in diameter) consists of two connected shells, with the cavity acting as a resonator. On the top sit precisely tuned tone fields that produce a clear note with long sustain when struck correctly.

The playing concept is intuitive: strike briefly and cleanly, then lift the hand quickly – this keeps the tone defined and “singing”. For beginners, a harmonic scale is recommended, as almost any note combination sounds musical.

  • Ideal for: relaxation, yoga, sound journeys, ambient & songwriting

Buying handpans – tunings & frequencies explained

The tuning (scale) defines the tonal layout of your handpan: the centre note (ding) is surrounded by the remaining notes (chorus). Popular scales include D minor, D Kurd, C major and G major. Many instruments are tuned so that all notes harmonise naturally, making patterns and melodies easy to create.

In addition to the scale, the frequency matters: 440 Hz is the standard for ensemble playing, while 432 Hz is often chosen for relaxation and meditation contexts. Also consider the number of notes and responsiveness to suit your playing style.

  • Ideal for: beginners, meditation/yoga sessions, sound design
  • Suitable for: solo playing, ensembles (440 Hz), recording & live use

432 Hz or 440 Hz – which frequency suits you?

For band, studio and ensemble playing, 440 Hz is usually the best choice. 432 Hz is often preferred for relaxation and meditation and is perceived as slightly softer. Ultimately, scale, material, playing technique and the room also influence the sound.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about handpans & steel tongue drums

The most important questions answered clearly and concisely – ideal for beginners and anyone comparing options before buying.

What is a handpan?
A handpan is a melodic percussion instrument made from two steel shells with tuned tone fields on top and a resonance opening underneath. It is played with the hands and produces soft, harmonious sounds.
What is a steel tongue drum?
A steel tongue drum is a tuned steel idiophone. Cut tongues vibrate when struck, producing clearly defined notes. It can be played with hands or soft mallets.
What is the difference between a handpan and a steel tongue drum?
  • Handpan: embossed tone fields, primarily hand-played, highly nuanced response.
  • Tongue drum: cut tongues, more direct/percussive sound, often more robust.
  • Handpans offer greater dynamic control; tongue drums are especially easy to handle.
Are these instruments suitable for beginners?
Yes. Tongue drums are extremely accessible thanks to consonant tunings; handpans require some technique but reward players with rich tonal colour.
Hands or mallets – how are they played?
Handpans are typically played with hands and fingers; tongue drums can be played with hands or padded mallets (often included).
How many notes and which scale are best for beginners?
Depending on the model, e.g. 8/9/10 notes (handpan) or 8/11/15 tongues (tongue drum). Harmonic scales are ideal for beginners as they sound musical even with simple patterns.
What should I look for when buying?
Material and build quality, workmanship, number of tone fields/tongues, tuning/scale, accessories (bag/mallets), warranty and retuning options.
How should I care for and store the instrument?
Store in a dry place, protect from moisture, clean hands before playing; oil handpans according to manufacturer instructions; avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
Can handpans and tongue drums be retuned or repaired?
Yes. Many manufacturers and specialist workshops offer retuning and repairs, especially for handpans.
What are these instruments used for?
Meditation, yoga, sound journeys, studio work (ambient/new age), teaching, performance and relaxed playing at home.
Can multiple instruments be combined?
Yes – for example handpan with tongue drum, light percussion, loopers and effects (reverb/delay) for expansive soundscapes.
