FAQ – Speaker Components

What are speaker components?

Speaker components are the individual parts that make up a sound system:

  • Woofers for low frequencies
  • Tweeters for high tones
  • Horns or coaxial drivers for clear projection

They allow you to build or repair loudspeakers to suit your preferred sound – whether for PA, studio, or home use.

Which speaker sizes are available?

At MUSIC STORE you’ll find components ranging from 5.25″ to 21″:

  • Small (5–8″): for compact systems
  • Medium (10–12″): for all-round setups
  • Large (15–21″): for powerful low-end response in bigger venues
What does impedance in ohms mean?

Impedance refers to the electrical resistance of a loudspeaker – common values include:

  • 4 ohms – for higher output
  • 8 ohms – standard value
  • 16 ohms – for specialised applications

Always ensure the speaker’s impedance matches your amplifier’s output to avoid distortion or damage.

How can I choose the correct power rating (watts)?

The power rating shows how much load a speaker can handle safely:

  • 200–500 W: smaller rooms or practice spaces
  • 500–1000 W: stage use
  • 1000 W+: outdoor or large-scale events

The speaker should be rated for at least as much power as the connected amplifier can deliver.

What’s the difference between woofers, tweeters and full-range speakers?
  • Woofers: reproduce low frequencies and bass
  • Tweeters: reproduce high frequencies and clarity
  • Full-range speakers: cover the complete audio spectrum – ideal for compact setups
What are horns used for?

Horns focus and amplify sound efficiently:

  • Provide directed sound coverage
  • Excellent for large halls or outdoor venues
  • Deliver greater sound pressure with equal amplifier power
What are coaxial speakers?

Coaxial speakers combine a woofer and a tweeter along the same axis:

  • Accurate, time-aligned sound reproduction
  • Perfect for monitors, installations, or compact PA systems
Can I replace or repair speaker components myself?
  • Yes – many loudspeakers use modular construction
  • Ensure matching impedance, power and dimensions
  • For complex repairs, contact the MUSIC STORE service team
