The A-198 module is a Trautonium manual / ribbon controller
A linear position sensor approximately 50 cm long, which is also equipped with a pressure-sensitive element, is used as the control element
The connection between the module and the position/pressure sensor is made via a 4-pin cable (as used for USB)
The sensor is housed in a separate, silver-grey painted metal frame
Typical applications: Trautonium playing manual, in which the playing string has been replaced by the significantly easier-to-use position sensor
In combination with the A-113 subharmonic oscillator, the A-104 Trautonium filter and several other modules, it is possible to recreate a complete Trautonium
With the aid of the A-156 quantiser, precise semitone intervals can also be generated
Ribbon controller for controlling any parameters in the A-100 (e.g. pitch, filter frequency, volume, pan, tempo, modulation depth, etc.)
The A-198 is a well constructed and nicely expressive controller. It works great with a quantizer for lead lines, especially if you use the pressure to control vibrato depth. When using for control of filter cutoff etc. it is often good to pass the output through a slew limiter for smoother control.
Both the Doepfer A-198 module and the ribbon controller are decently build (As used from Doepfer). It has a proper length "USB" cable for the Ribbon controller.
The Ribbon reacts as expected, simply to understand. I bought it for my Trautonium modules, but can also be used for other purposes. With an attenuator, slew limiter or quantizer it gives you a lot more functionality and freedom to play the ribbon. But that is personal taste.
There is also will be an A-198-2 from Doepfer, which has midi in/out and a build in Quantizer, but is also more expensive. I didn't need these functions and the A-198 suits my needs.
